Special Session on Cloud-based Multimedia
Organizers
- Jiangchuan Liu (Simon Fraser University, Canada)
- Chuan Wu (The University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong)
- Niklas Carlsson (Linköping University, Sweden)
Scope & Goals
Recent years have witnessed a surge of multimedia processing and distribution systems hosted in the cloud, spanning cloud-based music/video processing and distribution, cloud-based 2D/3D games, cloud-based virtual/augmented reality, etc. For example, NetFlix and ComCast are running on Amazon EC2, Skype is moving away from a peer-to-peer system to a cloud-based one, and Pokémon GO is reportedly to be relying on Googleâs cloud technologies. Nonetheless, the wide deployment of cloud-based multimedia does not speak of perfection: how should multimedia contents be deployed and replicated to more efficiently achieve globe-scale distribution? Can cloud-based computing enable more efficient multimedia encoding/decoding technologies? How to search multimedia contents when they are stored across multiple cloud sites? Just to name a few. In addition, new domains on cloud-based multimedia are under-explored, such as cloud-based multimedia for e-health, cloud-based multimedia analytics, cloud-based virtual/augmented reality. The topics of interest include, but are not limited to the following.
Topics of Interest
- Cloud-based multimedia encoding/decoding/processing
- Cloud-based multimedia content distribution
- Cloud-based multimedia search
